Franchise News: A Week in Review
First Kickball Franchise Awarded
The World Adult Kickball Association (WAKA) awarded their first franchise in New Orleans. The business was started as a way for others to meet new people and have fun; and what better way than a game of kickball?
WAKA is already in 35 states with thousands of involved kickballers, but the business decided to start franchising in order to bring the organization to other communities across the country. In fact, they hope to expand to over 200 locations within the next five years.
Burger King Spitting Lawsuit OK’d by Judge
A federal judge ruled that a suit filed against a Burger King franchise should be heard even though the restaurant’s attorneys requested to have it dismissed. The civil rights lawsuit was filed when a trucker contended that a worker spit in his burger in 2008; an act which they say was motivated by racial prejudice.
Subway Going Healthy with Bread
Subway, a brand that talks a great deal about eating healthy, has taken another step in making their menu a little bit more nutritious. The sandwich chain is now fortifying their bread with calcium and vitamin D. Now, when you order a 6-inch sub you’ll be receiving an additional 30% of the daily recommended value of calcium and 20% of the daily recommended value of vitamin D.
“Now the calcium included in each 6-inch serving of bread has the nutritional equivalent of one glass of milk,” said Mark Christiano, the Subway brand’s Global Baking Specialist.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, on average, men and women in the U.S. consume less than the recommended daily amount of calcium they need. In addition, the Institute of Medicine states that less than 1/3 of older people meet the recommended adequate intake for vitamin D based on total intake, including supplements. Now Subway has taken measures in order to help combat those possible vitamin deficiencies.
