Legendary Gambler Tetsuya is one of those retro anime that are incredibly good but underrated. The story is set in the year 1947 and follows the people of Shinjuku. These people are suffering from poverty and have barely enough to eat or afford necessities. So, in order to survive, some of them resort to making money by gambling.

The main character is Tetsuya, also known as, Travelling Tetsuya who is incredible when it comes to Mahjong. He is undefeated and soars high but when he encounters Boushu-san who is also skilled, the plot thickens. To Tetsuya’s dismay, he realizes his skills need improvement. This anime is plot-driven and full of exciting moments, all outsmarting each other while playing Mahjong.

Touhai Densetsu Akagi: Yami ni Maiorita Tensai

Now, this is considered a fan favourite in the genre of gambling. The story follows Nangou who is a compulsive gambler. Due to being a problem gambler, he has accumulated a debt of over three million yen. Nangou attempts to clear his debt and start a new chapter in his life. To do this, he decides to play a game of Mahjong with the mafia, placing his life as a wager. As the game picks up pace, we see the mafia winning and Nangou with each move getting close to his death.

But when all hope seems to be lost, a young boy, Shigeru Akagi lands upon the parlour. Akagi is also up to no good as he is on the run from the police. But Nangou on his last straw trying to turn the game, hands over the game to Akagi. Akagi is a complete novice but Nangou teaches him a few rules and gives up. But here comes the climax! At first, the Mafia men can only laugh at Akagi but it becomes increasingly clear that Akagi is a natural-born gambler. He emerges as a formidable opponent who fears nothing- not even death. This anime is highly rated and a must-watch!

Saki follows the story of a High school student, Saki Miyanaga who dislikes Mahjong. It is because of her family who would force her to play and punish her regardless of winning or losing the game.
