Centaurworld: Netflix’s New Animated Musical Reviewed

Centaurworld is a one of a kind animation on Netflix. I have never come across an animation like this in my entire life. And that is not an understatement. It really is quite unique in several ways. Suitable for people of all ages, Centaurworld brings home some really serious themes, masked with a very upbeat and humorous exterior. With a blend of elements that are both humorous and dark, Centaurworld creates a separate space for itself in Netflix’s catalogue. Netflix is currently facing a dearth of good mature animations, and Centaurworld is a really good fresh addition to that. Riding on a fantasy plot, Centaurworld is a musical with a portal fantasy theme, where Horse, our main character, finds herself transported into another world. A world where everything is magical and beautiful. But of course, everything is not as simple as it seems on the surface.

Megan Nicole Dong, a famous name in the industry, is the brains and driving force behind Centaurworld. Megan has quite the stripes to show for a stellar career, and it seems that Centaurworld is going to be one of her biggest successes. And we mention her experience because it really shows here. She has worked with Dreamworks before, and it really shows in the way the show has been animated. It is not mindless animation. Rather, it is very tasteful and artistic. Centaurworld makes use of different animation styles throughout its run to accommodate for the different situations, and it works really well. It really shows the amount of thought put into the little things. And it is something we really appreciate because it allows us to draw a contrast between different worlds in the show.

Centaurworld: What’s Good

There is a lot to be said about Centaurworld. But mostly, the thing we appreciate the most is the way it blends together mature themes with a humorous presentation and a very true to itself animation. We really love the way the creators have come together to create an animation so meaningful and fitting for the series. Centaurworld is a show that is very absurd at times, but in a very good way. Its absurdism and weirdness is very expressive of its own identity. And really plays a lot into its charm. Without the weirdness, Centaurworld would be too serious to enjoy as a show, and the absurdism really balances that out. Because Centaurworld is actually a very dark and even grotesque series at times. So it needs something to really maintain a neutral vibe.

The story, at its core, is very compelling and will keep you wanting for more. The first half of the season is quite light on the darker elements and mainly focusses on the absurdist part, but things really get serious in the second half. Which is also one of the major pitfalls of the show. It is the inconsistency in the first season. There is a very big shift of focus through the season and the tone changes dramatically. So the show might not be what you thought you were getting into. Which might not necessarily be a bad thing. But it might put some viewers off. The voice acting here though, is impeccable. And we really liked it. The dialogue, at times, can be a bit jarring. But it is nothing close to making you quit watching the show. Most of it is quite well placed and adds a subtle amount of playfulness to the show.

What’s Really Bad

If we had to talk about what is really bad about the show, there is not much to talk about. There are some things like some overly annoying characters built into the show. Their dialogue will just make you cringe and question the show. And then there is the fact that the show is just ten episodes long. It is quite a short season for the total amount of run time the show gets. So a longer season would have been appreciated. Other than that, there is not much to complain about the show. Sure, a few things here and there need to be improved, but given that it is the first season, there is hope for the future.
