Desperate Housewives is a name that needs no introduction, especially to fans of drama television. The show made a name for itself back in the aughts and went on to become one of the most successful shows for ABC at the time. It was a huge force to contend with, and led ABC to new heights after a continuous downfall owing to the disappointing dramas that it was putting out. But if the show was such a huge success, why is it that we were left stranded when it came to Desperate Housewives Season 9? Why is it that after so many years, we do not know where the story goes after season 8? That is a really big question that ABC needs to answer.
Desperate Housewives came out back in the October of 2004 and quickly rose to prominence following its narrative about a group of modern housewives. The show was loved by the audiences and was loved right from the first episode itself. Viewer ratings and audiences for the show were skyrocketing and it played a huge role in rejuvenating ABC’s arsenal of shows at the time, bringing much needed freshness to the table. The show went on to run for a long 180 episodes, bringing together much needed drama, story, darkness, and humor together, and pleasing fans in the process. The fan following was just insane for a show like this one, and then, it simply ended. A Desperate Housewives Season 9 never happened. And the viewers don’t know why. So without much further ado, let us talk more about the cancellation of the show, and why it happened.

Desperate Housewives Season 9: About The Show
Coming to the show, there is a lot to talk about here. Desperate Housewives is a show that was created by Marc Cherry back in 2004, and focused on the lives of young women, who are housewives, residing in a small neighborhood, and witnessed through the eyes of Mary Alice Young, their neighbor, played by Brenda Strong. The show follows the struggles of the women as they deal with life on the daily and have the daily struggles of being a housewife. Although life seems pretty calm and easygoing on the surface, there is a lot going on in the neighborhood that simply doesn’t meet the eye. Teri Hatcher, Marcia Cross, Felicity Huffman, and Eva Longoria star in the main roles in the series, portraying housewives. Each has its own story and its own problems, and it is a satisfying drama, to say the least.
The show simply shook the people over at the network when it came out, as it simply shot through all the rankings when it came to its first episode. The pilot episode of the show was watched by over 20 million people and was a huge success. This was particularly important in an era where ABC was struggling to keep up. Paired with a couple of other shows by the network, Desperate Housewives Season 9 was paramount in maintaining the success of ABC as a network. The show was also adored on an international level, with people worldwide appreciating the freshness and the level of sophisticated drama that it brought to the table. So then what was the reason behind the cancelation of Desperate Housewives Season 9?
Desperate Housewives Season 9: Cancelation
Coming to the cancelation of the show, it has been a long time since the show was canceled. But over the years, viewers maintained hope that the show would come back after a hiatus. However, to be quite fair, that simply isn’t the case and the show is never going to return to the television. It truly is over. Desperate Housewives Season 9 was canceled not due to decisions made by the network or the production team, but rather, due to a decision made by the creator of the series, Marc Cherry, himself. Cherry, all through his years as the director of the show, maintained the belief that he wanted to end the show while it was still popular and to end things on a high note.
This is understandable considering that many shows just run out of the creativity they have or lose their initial oomph leading to bad audience reactions towards the final seasons. Marc Cherry did not want to make that mistake and wanted to end the show when the time was still ripe. So, just as he began to run out of the creativity to keep the show engaging on the same level and to tell a story that he really wanted to tell, he decided to pull the plug and end things on a good note. The actors for the show did have a contract for Desperate Housewives Season 9, but Cherry’s creative decision nullified that, and the show was ended on good. I personally think it was a very good decision because the popularity of the show was really good, but not at the same level that it was before. And that was a clear telltale sign.
Recently, the creator also elaborated a bit on his decision and stated, “I did 180 episodes of Desperate Housewives. So you know, unlike say a Sex and the City or something, which was on cable and didn’t do as many, I feel like I’ve done that. And in a weird way, I found a new way to do it. So many of the themes that I get to deal with are on Why Women Kill.”
He further stated that “doing streaming, I do ten episodes, and then it’s over. The thing I went through that was so difficult on Desperate Housewives was cliffhangers. ‘Okay, I’ve got to do a cliffhanger every year, and they’re lives have to change completely, and oh god, that’s so hard!’ You know, just doing ten episodes at a time, it feels like a much more manageable prospect, and I feel I’ve done my Masters program, and this is my doctoral thesis right here, so that’s kind of how I’m feeling about it.”
This confirms that there is never going to be a revival of the show, and it is probably best to forget about it. The show was good for what it was, and now there are other things to look forward to, like the show the creator has stated: Why Women Kill.
