High on the Hog brings something really important to the table. And it does so quite literally. Taking us on a journey of culinary history, the show is one that has a purpose. And it holds a really important place in the world of today when we are forgetting our culture and where we came from and moving to a more cosmopolitan world. Of course, that is not the only thing we need to take care of, but it is an important one nonetheless. And one that definitely needs to be discussed. So High on the Hog is quite a welcome show in that sense. And there is a lot else the show has to tell.
High on the Hog takes us back on a tour in history and takes us back into a time when the world wasn’t so nice and people weren’t so considerate. I’m sure that those of you who have been affected by the horrors of the time have already guessed what the show is all about. But there will also be those of you who might not have guessed it. And that is why we are here today. We are going to talk all about the show, what it entails, the legacy it talks about, and what it brings to the table for all of us. So lovers of food and culture should gather around for this one because it is going to be quite amazing. Without much further ado, let us get right into it.
High on the Hog: About the Docuseries
High on the Hog, as the name suggests, is one for the foodies of Netflix. The show is one that focuses on the history of food and all the inspirations that it has taken over the years. But most importantly, the show focuses on Black Culture and the food that it brought to the west. The show takes us on a journey through time and takes us back to Africa, where the history of Black culture can be traced. It tells the story of how the food originated and is presented in a form akin to that presented by other food shows and documentaries that you might have seen. It is one that must be watched if you’re a follower of Black culture or someone who merely wants to know more about their ancestry and history.
Presented by Stephen Satterfield and elaborated by historian Dr. Jessica B. Harris, the show takes the viewers through Benin for the beginning of the show and explores the history of African culture, how all the culinary influences of today came into being and explores the history behind the American food that takes its roots in Africa itself. And so, the show is one that is going to appeal to those who belong to the culture and have deep seated love for it. It is one of the best shows one can watch if one wants to delve deeper into the why and how of food and cooking.
Talking about the show and his intent behind it, Satterfield said, “We hadn’t seen anything like this in the food and travel genre. The makers of the show, the subject of the show, was really about us reflecting our love for Black people and Black culture and appreciation for all those contributions, and I feel that Black folks throughout the diaspora felt that attention, they felt that care and love. That for me was by far the most gratifying part of the whole experience.”
And there is definitely an aspect of emotionality to the show. It is easy to see that the show comes from the heart of those who made it. For those of us who are not well versed in Black culture, this might be a good way to start. Even Satterfield says that he didn’t have to give direction in the parts of our story that were somber or difficult. “That sober feeling, that bad feeling is very easy to access. It’s always close to the surface, but that Black love and joy and community is also close to the surface. Omar is a homie, he’s someone that I respect. Filming in his company, eating his food — that’s joy, that’s a celebration in itself.” And he would be right. This is something that will be quite apparent to anyone who watches the show closely.
He also went on to say that Gabrielle Etienne is someone he adores, respects, and admires. BJ Dennis and so many other outstanding talents from our people, culture, and heritage are brilliantly reflecting it back to the globe. It was a true privilege to be a part of that event with them for him. And it certainly is.

High on the Hog is one you should definitely be watching if you are someone who follows black culture and wants to know more about its history and the way that the food of today has been inspired by the food of the past. It is an insightful watch and one I would highly recommend to you.
