The Magicians Season 5: Why It Ended

The Magicians Season 5

How often does it happen that you fall in love with a show, only for it to be canceled at the peak of its story? It hits you right in the gut when it happens, and you are left wondering what went wrong. The same is the case with the Magicians, which was abruptly ended a while ago. No particular reason could be ascertained for the end of the show, and viewers were left in the blue about the story that could have been. I was particularly fond of the show, and enjoyed it for a light watch now and then. But after its cancelation, I was distraught with the route the network had taken. So what went wrong with the Magicians season 5? Why did it end? That is the question that we are going to answer today.

How many of you are fans of magic? I bet most of you are. It brings back memories from our childhood and takes us back to a time when everything was possible and nothing was out of reach. Everything was amazing and the sun was brighter than ever. It is just a nostalgic trip everytime a magician pulls a penny from behind your ear. And I love all of it. I’m sure you do too. The Magicians was a show that invoked the same feelings with the sense of wonder and craziness that it exuded. It told us that nothing was off limits and everything was possible, and that is why it was so loved by everyone. It brought out all that we expected from a magic show, and then some. But everything comes to an end, and so did the Magicians. So without much further ado, let us get into it.

The Magicians Season 5: What Happened?

The Magicians is a show based on a book, like many other good shows. It was based on the novel of the same name by Lev Grossman, and aired on the Syfy channel. There was nothing that went wrong with the show in terms of the plot or the public reception. In fact, it did as well as it always did. But the show was canceled in a shocking move by the Syfy network at the end of season 5. The network stated that the show will not be renewed for a sixth season.

The network stated, “The Magicians has been a part of our Syfy family for five fantastic seasons. As we near the end of this journey, we want to thank John McNamara, Sera Gamble, Henry Alonso Myers, Lev Grossman, and our entire brilliant cast, crew, writers and directors for their beautiful creation. But most of all, we thank the fans for their tremendous support and passion. Because of you, magic will be in our hearts forever.”

The show ended in quite an abrupt manner, as it was canceled in the midst of plot lines. And the executive producer for the show elaborated on the fact that they themselves didn’t know whether the show was going to be renewed for a sixth season. With the exception of Season 5, they never knew if the show was going to be renewed, which ultimately led to the show being canceled abruptly, and the viewers being left in the blue with unanswered questions.

The showrunner stated, “We’ve always been a show about entering into all of the crazy, twisted aspects of adult life, and the fact that not everything in the finale gets wrapped up in a bow feels very right to me. So, I think it’ll be satisfying. We feel satisfied with it. We feel we did what we set out to do. The rest we kinda just gotta leave it up to the audience to see how they feel and what they take away from it.”

But the show crumbled under the weight of monetary issues. There is always the consideration of what the show earned and how much it spent on the production. At the end, that became the major issue, as the income for the show wasn’t being increased, but the production costs were. Ultimately, the network decided to scrap the show.

They stated, “Where the show was always challenging, where I think actually we exercised the most creativity, was with the budget. And I’m not knocking anybody, they gave us a budget. We knew what it was. It increased slightly every year as certain costs went up, and as long as we stayed within that budget, we could do anything we wanted. We always knew we existed in this sort of rarefied realm that was very much dependent on how much we spent and how much we took in.”

Ultimately, showrunner Gamble stated that with season 5, the point had come where there was no more room for any expansion, and the show had to end. They did try to get another network to pick up the show, but that didn’t happen, and the Magicians season 5 met its untimely end.

The Magicians Season 5: Final Words

The Magicians Season 5 cancelation was one gut wrenching news. But that is just the way things happened. Money triumphed quality, and we lost an amazing show. And that is the way of the world. I hope the show gets picked up by another network in the future, but chances honestly look quite bleak.
