The Many Saints of Newark might just be one of the most awaited movies this year. In fact, I’m practically holding my breath for it. It is finally bringing the Sopranos back into popular culture and into our lives again. The movie, which takes place much before the Sopranos, promises to bring the franchise to a newer and a younger audience and to give the existing fans a glimpse into Anthony Soprano‘s past. I’m personally really excited for it, and I know for a fact that most of you are too.
It is the return of one of the most important TV show franchises of all time. And it is going to be a new era for such shows and movies, and will set a precedent for others to follow, just like the Sopranos did. The Many Saints of Newark has a lot riding on it, in terms of expectations, as well as cultural impact.
How many of you are fans of mafia? Or maybe even crime in general? Well on screen of course! The majority of you right? That is the case with most of the young audience today. And it is really a sad reality that none of them have been introduced to the Sopranos, which is just a fine classic example of a TV show done right. With the release of the Many Saints of Newark, I have a lot of hope that the young generation will come to love and develop a fondness for the franchise. And that level of responsibility is not going to be easy for the team that is responsible for bringing the movie on hand to the big screen.
It has been such a long time since the Sopranos last aired, and it’s going to be tough to bring people back to that state of mind which led them to love it in the first place. And it is also a huge undertaking in the sense that most characters here are those that we have only ever heard of, and not seen in true action. So without much further ado, let us talk all about the upcoming Many Saints of Newark.
In the past, we have also talked about The Many Saints of Newark when the first trailer for the movie hit the internet. You may want to check out The Many Saints Of Newark: First Look to get a good idea of what we are actually talking about here and to get all the info that you might need.
The Many Saints of Newark: Plot
David Chase began the Sopranos with a vision. And The Many Saints of Newark sets right into that same vision as it tells the story of what happened before the Sopranos and how Anthony Soprano became the person that he is. It shows him growing up from being a troubled kid to one of the most respected people in the community. It shows his development from a boy to a man, under the mentorship of his teacher.
The movie takes place in 1967, which was a time of severe civil unrest, and riots were taking place all over the country. This specific movie talks about the riots that happened in Newark, which were fueled by rampant racism and intolerance. The time period later went on to be termed as the Long Hot Summer of 1967. David Chase, the brains behind the movie, also noted that the movie was inspired by some of his experiences as a young one himself. He empathized with the Black people of Newark and mentioned the same.
The official synopsis for The Many Saints of Newark states, “Young Anthony Soprano is growing up in one of the most tumultuous eras in Newark’s history, becoming a man just as rival gangsters begin to rise up and challenge the all-powerful DiMeo crime family’s hold over the increasingly race-torn city. Caught up in the changing times is the uncle he idolizes, Dickie Moltisanti, who struggles to manage both his professional and personal responsibilities—and whose influence over his impressionable nephew will help make the teenager into the all-powerful mob boss we’ll later come to know: Tony Soprano.”
This should be enough perspective for most fans as it defines the movie as a whole and gives it a proper outline. It is focused on his relationship with his uncle, who eventually becomes a very crucial shaping figure in the way Anthony Soprano grows and shapes his own mind.

The Many Saints of Newark: Cast
Coming to the cast for the Many Saints of Newark, it is quite an interesting affair. In the main role, we have a young Anthony Soprano. Now the best thing about this character is that it is played by none other than the real son of the late James Gandolfini, the man who played Anthony Sopranos in the original series. His son, Michael Gandolfini, now reprises his role as a much younger version of him, and carries on his late father’s legacy. This is the most interesting cast choice that I absolutely loved.
Other big names in the cast include Alessandro Nivola as Dickie Moltisanti, Leslie Odom Jr. as Harold McBrayer, Jon Bernthal as Johnny Soprano, Corey Stoll as Junior Soprano, Billy Magnussen as Paulie Walnuts, Michaela De Rossi, Germar Terrell Gardner, John Magaro, Ray Liotta, and Vera Farmiga as various roles.
