In the world of psychological horror games, there is hardly any that comes close to Outlast. I’m sure that those of you who are fans of horror and hardcore psychological thrillers would have heard of Outlast or at the very least watched a video or two about it. The game is considered a masterpiece by many in the gaming community and has since then been followed up by a DLC as well as a successor that were both well received by the respective audiences. In fact, most of the bad responses towards the game have simply been because of the sheer terror and graphic visuals that it shows to the player. It is simply too much for a few players. With The Outlast Trials, we can expect this trend to continue.
That’s right, Outlast is getting another successor to the second game in the franchise. Red Barrel, the developer behind the game, is quite eager about it too. In fact, the game has been announced for quite a long time now and has been active development since 2019. Players around the world have been waiting for the third game in the Outlast franchise since then. The hype is quite unreal, and I don’t really blame anyone for it. The Outlast franchise has proven as a sole provider to real scary psychological thriller fans. With The Outlast Trials, the franchise is also taking a big step forward, as there are some significant changes to be seen here. To find out what these changes are, keep reading about the game below.
The Outlast Trials: About The Game
The Outlast Trials is the third game in the Outlast franchise and takes a radically different direction than the first two games. Set in an era that acts as a prequel to the first game, the game will put players back in the Murkoff Corporation’s hands again. This time around, however, things are supposed to be very different. Murkoff Corporation is still carrying out the same old shady trials and we are put in the midst of it. However, this time we expect significant changes in the gameplay as has been indicated by Red Barrel themselves again and again. In the earlier Outlast games, we were constantly running from the enemies and trying to find an escape for ourselves, all in order to survive.
That all changes with The Outlast Trials, however. Now, players will be able to take on these enemies by themselves and defeat them in equally brutal fashions. This is a big step up from the previous Outlast games and has been something that players have demanded for a long time. A more sophisticated movement and combat system is definitely on the way and could really change the way that people look at the franchise, for better or for worse. There is a chance that this gameplay overhaul could completely change the perception of the franchise and turn out to be a double-edged sword. But that is again something that only time will confirm.
Also, we are going to be seeing the addition of a co-op mode to the game. This is a radical change as this changes the way that the entire game works. A lot of teamwork is going to be required in this mode, as you and your teammate will need to work in tandem to run from the pursuer and defeat them in unique and creative ways. I am personally really excited about all these new changes and new additions to the franchise. It seems that The Outlast Trials is the fan service that the fans have deserved since the longest time, and Red Barrel is finally delivering on it.
The Outlast Trials: Release Date
This is sort of a sore subject for many fans of the franchise since The Outlast Trials was announced back in 2017 by Red Barrel. However, since date, fans are still waiting to get their hands on the much fabled Outlast game that is going to change everything about the franchise. In fact, Red Barrel started development on the game after 2 years in 2019. The original stipulated release date for the game was sometime in 2021. However, due to the COVID pandemic, the development underwent significant delays and the game was delayed to 2022. But we are now past the half-year mark and there is still no release date. So it is safe to say that we won’t be seeing The Outlast Trials come out before 2023.
This is not the news that fans wanted to hear, but it is unfortunately the case. Hopefully, the game comes out in due time and gives the fans what they needed. After all, a delayed game is better than one that is not complete at the time of release.
The Outlast Trials: Outlook
The Outlast Trials is one game that can completely revamp the franchise or completely destroy it in the eyes of the fans and is thus a really important one. What the case will be is something that we can’t predict. However, I am highly hopeful that the game comes out in due time and delivers on the promises that Red Barrel have made.
