The Way Of The Househusband takes everything you ever thought about life, puts it in a blender, and makes a smoothie out of it. That is just the simplest way this series can be described. This is because it is truly one of a kind, and you would be hard pressed to find something that takes absurdity to this level. Coming out just a year ago, the series is one that has had all anime fans in a row. And the fact that it is available on the Netflix platform to all just adds to the fire that it has already set across the community. But why is it so?
I’m personally someone who believes that it is quite difficult for someone to go from a life of leisure and ease to a life that is not easy and certainly doesn’t involve leisure, and it is even more difficult to do it by your own choice. Some people believe otherwise, and the Way of the Househusband is one of those shows that would beg to differ with me on this. And that’s really good, because the show does make a lot of its points, coupled with humour that would have your bellies aching. It is almost a satirical show, but it’s a comedy anime for those of you are particular about genres. So without much further ado, let us get right into the discussion about this eventful anime.
The Way of the Househusband: About The Anime
The Way of the Househusband is an anime that borders between a serious thriller and a comedy. Based on the original novel by the name of Gokushufudō which came out back in 2018, the anime tells the story of a former famous yakuza who is known by the name of The Immortal Dragon all over the world and eventually gives up his gig to become a househusband to his hard working wife who wants to prosper in her career. The show sees him handling all the household chores, which are in huge contrast to his earlier actions, and him living a decent life. But soon, ghosts from the past emerge and he is hunted down by old friends and foes who are determined to drag him back where he came from.
The show is one that is going to appeal to those who are fans of comedy and like stuff like this. The anime shows our Immortal Dragon getting in trouble everyday and trying to live his life as a househusband without letting the past affect him. Of course, things never go as planned and he gets stuck in often hilarious situations, much to the displeasure of his wife. The director for the series, Chiaki Kon, also came forward to talk about the series and she had a lot of good stuff for the fans.
When talking about why she took up the story and what she found to be the most interesting about it she said that she didn’t fully grasp Tatsu’s character when she first read the manga. As she began working on the series though, Isherealized that Tatsu was somewhat a clown who was comical without knowing it himself. This allowed her to understand his character in her own way and to move ahead with the project smoothly. Talking about her favorite moments, she said, “I particularly like “Limit of the Knees” in the manga in which a yakuza trains to strengthen his knees before taking on Tatsu, but his knees got soft and he falls on the ground the moment he sees the latter. I was so looking forward to animating it for the series while reading this from the manga.”
For fans of the show, there is yet another major announcement. The Way of the Househusband is being adapted into an a live action series, and Kon also had something to say about making the anime in contrast to the adaptation. “My main target was to make an anime that was true to the manga, so I wasn’t very conscious of the live-action adaptation. There are many acrobatic movements in the manga and I knew they would be interesting when animated. I just felt that I wanted to make a fun series, but it wasn’t an easy series to work on,” she said in an interview. This is certainly great news for the fans who will now be able to enjoy the story in three different formats.
The Way of the Househusband: Final Words
Coming to the end, I would only like to say that the Way of the Househusband is an anime that many would simply love, and it would be endeared by fans of the manga and those who like comedy. A third season of the show seems quite likely too, so keep an eye out on the latest updates regarding that. In the meanwhile, do catch up with the first two seasons of the show. It is truly phenomenal, and I highly recommend it.
