Origin: Square Enix

In April 2003, Square and Enix merged to become the original Square Enix Co., Ltd., with Enix emerging as the victor. In return for each share of Square’s common stock, Enix shareholders received 0.85 Enix shares.

At the time, more than 80% of Square Enix’s personnel had previously worked for Square. To lead the new company, former Square boss Yoichi Wada will assume the role of president, while Enix boss Keiji Honda will serve as vice president, according to the announcement.

Yasuhiro Fukushima, the founder of Enix and the merged company’s biggest shareholder, was appointed chairman. Since then, Square Enix has separated its corporate business and video game activities into two separate companies: one for the holding company and one for its internal domestic video game operations.

Video games

Square Enix’s primary concentration is on video gaming, and it is primarily known for its role-playing video game franchises. Of its properties, the Final Fantasy franchise, begun in 1987, is the best-selling, with a total worldwide sales of over 110 million units as of June 2014.

The Dragon Quest franchise, begun in 1986, is also high-selling; it is considered one of the most popular game series in Japan, and new installments regularly outsell other games at the time of their release, with a total worldwide sales of over 71 million units. More recently, the Kingdom Hearts series that developed in collaboration with Disney‘s Interactive Studios beginning in 2002 has become popular, with over 20 million units sold as of March 2014

Originally targeting Nintendo home consoles, Square Enix now creates games for a broad range of devices. Square Enix published new games for all three main platform generations in the seventh generation, including Final Fantasy XIII for the PS3 and Xbox 360 and Dragon Quest X for the Wii.

Square Enix mobile phone games became accessible on the Vodafone network in 2004 in Germany, the UK, Spain, and Italy.

Game engine

Square Enix owns two significant game engines. In 2004, Square Enix started working on a “common 3D format” that would enable the business to produce products without being bound to a certain platform: Crystal Tools.

Based on the demo’s success, it was utilized for Final Fantasy XIII. Also used for Final Fantasy Versus XIII before it was renamed Final Fantasy XV and moved to next-gen platforms. The engine was fine-tuned for Final Fantasy XIII-2, and then completely overhauled for Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII.

Since then, no additional Crystal Tools games have been announced, and the engine’s development seems to be finished. The second main in-house engine is Luminous Engine, which was first shown at E3 2012 in a tech demo called Agni’s Philosophy.

Cloud Gaming

In 2013, Dragon Quest X was released for iOS and Android in Japan through NTT DoCoMo and Ubitus. In 2014, Ubitus launched it on Japan’s 3DS.

A free-to-play Cloud gaming platform that “throws gamers into ‘limitless game worlds’ instantly via their web browser” was unveiled by Square Enix on May 8, 2012.

Film

The firm has three film credits. Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (2001) was made by Square Pictures before the Enix merger; Square Pictures is now a Square Enix subsidiary. Due to the film’s failure at the box office, Enix delayed the planned merger until Square regained profitability.

Square Enix

Manga

In Japan, the firm maintains a manga publishing section named Gangan Comics, which solely produces work for the Japanese market. Square Enix established a digital manga shop for North American customers in 2010, including numerous noteworthy Gangan anthologies.

Fullmetal Alchemist is Square Enix’s most popular manga title, with over 64 million copies sold worldwide. It’s licensed by Viz Media in North America and Funimation Entertainment in the US for its two anime adaptations.

Square Enix’s newest RPG Has 10 Steam Gamers

On PC, Babylon’s Fall, the newest co-op action RPG from Square Enix and Platinum Games, has dipped below 10 concurrent players for the first time. On April 13, just eight people started Babylon’s Fall on Steam, according to SteamCharts, a new low for the ailing game.

It has 93 active players at press time, and 149 active players during the past 30 days. Since its introduction in early March, the game has lost players. It was a flop, with just 1,188 players the day following release.
Critics were as unkind, giving it negative ratings.

It’s presently the second-worst release of the year and the worst-reviewed PS5 game on Metacritic.
